Description

The Chișinău City Hall signed agreements with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for a total of 12 million euros, including a 4 million euro grant, to implement the Bîc River Rehabilitation and Flood Protection Project.

The Bîc River Rehabilitation and Flood Protection Project is crucial for Chișinău and is an integral part of the Green City Action Plan, aiming to address the increasingly severe effects of climate change.

The objectives of the municipality include river cleaning, bank rehabilitation, revitalizing water flow, and creating a green-blue corridor for the city.

The implementation of the project is estimated to take about 3 years, in several stages:

Year 1 investment plan includes: Developing an integrated catchment model (combining sewage, surface water, and improved rainwater modeling) to identify current issues and flood depth and frequency.

The plan also involves strengthening institutional capacities, topographic and existing asset studies, hydraulic modeling, digital asset management, acquiring equipment for drainage network cleaning and maintenance (Regia EXDRUPO manages outdated equipment that frequently malfunctions), installing flap valves (20 pieces), and all design works for future projects.

Year 2 investments will include: Initial rehabilitation of the drainage network and river channel profiling for 7.6 km of the urban section.

Rehabilitation of the urban drainage system to reduce flood frequency and improve water quality flowing into the river. Green-blue natural solutions have been included as part of the proposal.

Profiling approximately 7.6 km of the river within urban limits, which includes:

A low-flow channel to enhance water quality by increasing velocity and entraining fine sediments under normal flow conditions, thereby improving the river's self-cleaning abilities.

A high-flow channel to increase conveyance during high flows, reducing the current flood risk and estimated future risk due to climate change.

Investment: 12 000 000 euro
