Chisinau City Hall has launched the "MOVE IT like Lublin" initiative for sustainable development of municipal public transport. The project is funded by the European Union and aims to support local authorities in Chisinau in the process of transforming municipal public transport into a more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable transport system.
The three main objectives of the project are:
- to
improve public transport policies at municipal level;
- to increase the
institutional capacity of the Chisinau City Hall in the field of urban
mobility, in line with EU practices in the field;
- to increase the quality of
public transport management by implementing innovative solutions and
technologies.
During the first year of activity of the project, launched in January 2022, several exchanges of best practices and know-how took place between the cities of Lublin and Chisinau, as well as other European cities, with the participation of managers of municipal transport institutions and local authority representatives. With the support of the project, the reform of the General Directorate of Public Transport and Roads was initiated and implemented, becoming the General Directorate of Urban Mobility as of 1 January 2023.
In addition, the project will develop a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for Chisinau and create a Traffic Monitoring Centre.
The project will also digitize operations such as e-tickets and web applications for public transport, reflecting best practices in EU cities, including Lublin.
The total
budget of the project is €3.5 million, of which €3.32 million is the European
Union's contribution in the form of a grant and €175 thousand is allocated by
the Chisinau City Hall. The financial sources are allocated in several tranches
over a period of 4 years.
