Grigore Vieru Street Alley – a Pleasant and Safe Space for Pedestrians
The pedestrian alley on Grigore Vieru Street, in the city center, was renovated as part of a project launched in 2022. Several important works were carried out: the alley was widened and paved, the green space was rehabilitated with the planting of various shrubs and flowers, and modern benches were installed. A modern irrigation system for the green areas was also installed. Street lighting was upgraded, improving nighttime safety, and a video surveillance system was installed.
Existing parking spaces in the area were arranged and marked, and the cast-iron fence along both sides of the street was painted. Access for people with disabilities was facilitated by adjusting the sidewalk height, and pedestrian crossings were raised.
Ten swings were installed along the alley. There is also a fountain with a bronze dove, installed in July 2022. This work is by sculptor Veaceslav Jiglițki, author of several urban sculptures in Chișinău and an Honorary Citizen of the municipality.
Additionally, a traditional Moldovan carpet design was integrated into the urban design of the pedestrian area. The carpet is located on the segment from Eugen Doga Street to Ierusalim Street, with the project financially supported by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA). At the beginning of the alley on Grigore Vieru Street, the national symbol “Tree of Life” was arranged in the pavement.
Previously, dozens of advertising panels were removed from this alley and nearby intersections.
The alley has become an attractive location for both residents and visitors of the capital.
