Founded in 1978, the Chișinău Zoo covers an area of approximately 25 hectares. In its early years, it was home to only 60 species of animals.
In recent years, the Municipal Enterprise under the authority of the Chișinău City Hall has undergone a major modernization process — from infrastructure improvements to the acquisition of new species of birds and animals. Today, the zoo is home to about 1,100 birds and animals, many of which are listed in the International Red Book and the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova. Among the residents of the zoo are the European mouflon, Bengal tiger, leopard, lion, African lynx, bear, Patagonian hare, several monkeys, mountain goats, zebras, camels, owls, crocodiles, turtles, snakes, swans, ducks, and many others.
A new area has been arranged for predatory animals, aviaries have been built for bears, carnivores, and primates, and a facility for newly acquired animals has been renovated to provide better living conditions. The main stairs and the access ramp at the entrance to the zoo were repaired for the first time in 40 years. At the same time, an access ramp was arranged for people with special needs and for parents with baby strollers.
Visitors can also take a break in one of the four pavilions built on the premises. The building where children and teenagers learn about flora and fauna has been repaired. In this context, the zoo’s specialists launched the ecological education initiative “Children About Animals”, aimed at developing a love of nature and animals among the younger generation.
The Chișinău Zoo offers guided tours, and at the Rural Yard, children can get acquainted with domestic animals and birds. There is also a playground for kids on the premises.
The Chișinău Zoo is a full member of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZA). It is also part of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the International Species Information System (ISIS).
