The Municipal Hospital “Gheorghe Paladi” is widely known as Maternity Hospital No. 1 near the viaduct and has strategic importance for the Municipality of Chișinău and for the entire Republic of Moldova. It is one of the largest institutions in the fields of obstetrics, gynecology, and neonatology in the country and in Europe, where the most complex cases are treated.
The institution was founded in 1959 in Chișinău as a new hospital focused on maternal and child healthcare, given the limited number of beds available at that time.
Starting in 1963, the City Clinical Hospital No. 1 became a clinical base of the State Institute of Medicine in Chișinău, hosting departments of obstetrics and gynecology, therapy, and surgery, thus fostering the integration of medical practice with scientific innovation.
By the late 1970s, the hospital had become essential for Chișinău, with a strong focus on reproduction and fertility. The number of beds increased to 500, including 135 pediatric beds. In 1992, a new neonatal-pediatric treatment block was constructed.
By decision of the Chișinău Municipal Council in 2020, the Municipal Clinical Hospital No. 1 was named “Gheorghe Paladi” as a sign of gratitude and appreciation for the outstanding merits of Academician, university professor, and renowned obstetrician-gynecologist Gheorghe Paladi. He dedicated seven decades of his life to this medical institution and is considered the founder of the obstetric-gynecological service in the Republic of Moldova. Subsequently, in 2021, the bas-relief “Gheorghe Paladi” was installed and a bust of the academician was inaugurated at the Municipal Clinical Hospital that bears his name.
Within the medical institution operates the only Septic Gynecology Department in the Republic of Moldova, which serves patients with various gynecological complications. At the same time, the hospital provides specialized medical services at high quality standards, including in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, therapy, and pediatrics.
Energy efficiency project: the façade was completely renovated, walls were thermally insulated, windows replaced, and the roof and thermal points repaired.
The block where surgical interventions and delivery rooms are located was rehabilitated, and elevators were replaced—an essential necessity for medical institutions.
The pregnancy pathology department was also renovated.
The neonatology and pediatrics departments, as well as the intensive care unit, were rehabilitated.
In addition to major renovations carried out at SCM “Gheorghe Paladi”, the institution also benefited from medical equipment acquisitions:
In 2020, three pulmonary ventilators and an ambulance were purchased, essential for patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, a hematology analyzer, three disinfection devices, and an electric generator were acquired.
In 2022, an ESR analyzer, three microscopes, two sterilization cabinets, two thermostats, and seven medical stretchers were purchased.
Operating tables and delivery tables, surgical lamps, anesthesia equipment, resuscitation tables for neonatal intensive care units and gynecology departments, as well as furniture for patient wards were also procured. The medical equipment is adapted for women with special needs. With the support of foreign partners, a state-of-the-art computed tomography scanner was acquired.
Approximately 6,000 children are born annually at the Municipal Clinical Hospital “Gheorghe Paladi”. The total capacity of the medical institution is 500 beds. Each year, approximately 240,000 residents from across the country receive medical services here, and about 4,500 surgical interventions are performed.
