At the end of 2021 the contract for the execution of the capital repair works of 31 August 1989 Street was signed with the winning contractor following the public tender, and the actual works started in April 2022. The works include the rehabilitation of the carriageway and pavements, the development of street parking and the upgrading of street lighting. The cost of the works is €5.4 million.
The 3.1 km-long street is being reconstructed, changing its category from a car-free street to a street where pedestrians, cyclists and motorists have equal rights.
This means that the pavement is widened and a cycle path is laid out on the carriageway, making it a "coridor verde". Intersections will be made safe with traffic lights and curb extensions, and tactile paving will be applied to pedestrian areas to help the visually impaired find their way.
The work is due to be completed in 18 months from the start date.
The street repairs are part of Package II of the project "Rehabilitation of central streets and modernization of public lighting in the centre of Chisinau municipality"/„Reabilitarea strazilor centrale si modernizarea iluminatului public al centrului municipiului Chisinau”, financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (BERD), the European Investment Bank (BEI) and the BERD's Special Green Energy Fund. The project also includes Alexandru cel Bun and Tighina streets, which are being repaired at the same time.
The total value of the BERD/BEI project is €11.8 million.
